[Israel.pm] $x[-3] negative array index crashing perl

I seem to remember that negative array indexes (such as $x[-3] used to
crash perl
(if I am not mistaken it was not just a die but a crash) if the array
was smaller.

I don't seem to be able to reproduce this in 5.8.8

Is this a bug that got fixed? When?
I could not find it in the changes but admittedly I have not searched too much.

Do I have delusions?
